Carved in Stone is a series of profiles on some of the famous characters who helped develop and mould the history and culture of South Africa. They have two things in common: they were all Freemasons and members of the same Masonic Lodge, Lodge De Goede Hoop, in Cape Town. Each account started as a research documant for presentation in various forums, mostly at masonic functions, but here the author has taken the liberty of adding creative flesh to those dusty bones.
As the narrative follows a specific timeline where each story leads into the next it can really be considered one saga. This is especially so as it interweaves the story of the Cape and Cape Town from the end of the Dutch period into the British occupation. It shows how the tensions of this transition led to momentous changes in the political landscape and the spread of Freemasonry to the rest of the country.
