Description

Carved in Stone

[Y93304]

Publisher: Lewis Masonic

ISBN: 9780620470803

Carved in Stone is a series of profiles on some of the famous characters who helped develop and mould the history and culture of South Africa. They have two things in common: they were all Freemasons and members of the same Masonic Lodge, Lodge De Goede Hoop, in Cape Town. Each account started as a research documant for presentation in various forums, mostly at masonic functions, but here the author has taken the liberty of adding creative flesh to those dusty bones.

As the narrative follows a specific timeline where each story leads into the next it can really be considered one saga. This is especially so as it interweaves the story of the Cape and Cape Town from the end of the Dutch period into the British occupation. It shows how the tensions of this transition led to momentous changes in the political landscape and the spread of Freemasonry to the rest of the country.

Freemasonry has played an important part in most of the author Rodney Grosskopff's life. Over the years he has progressed through the ranks from initiate to Assistant District Grand Master South Africa North. Born in Johannesburg, he has a diploma in architecture from the University of the Witwatersrand. After qualifying he joined Manfred Hermer, where he would retire as senior partner. If this is not enough, he has written papers on Freemasonry, plays, travel features and six children's stories for SABC-TV. He has also held joint and solo art exhibitions for his paintings, sketches and sculptures. The image on the front cover of Carved in Stone is taken from his sculpture of Johannes Hendricus Brand, who is profiled in the book.
